How to Sign a PDF Online: Draw, Place, Download — Without Uploading the Contract
A signed agreement used to mean print, sign, scan, email — fifteen minutes, a printer you may not own, and a final scan uglier than the original. The modern version takes ninety seconds: open the PDF, draw your signature, place it on the line, download. Done properly, it also never exposes the contract to a third-party server, which matters more for agreements than for almost any other document type.
This guide covers the practical method, the placement details that make a signature look professional rather than pasted-on, and an honest plain-language note on when drawn e-signatures are appropriate versus when you need more formal signing infrastructure.
The 90-second method
- Open the PDF Editor and drop in your contract. It renders page by page in your browser — nothing is uploaded, which you can verify by going offline after the page loads.
- Navigate to the signature page with Prev/Next.
- Click Sign. A signature pad opens — draw with your mouse, or much better, your finger or stylus on a phone or tablet. Mess it up? Clear and redraw; nobody nails it first try with a mouse.
- Click Place on page. Your signature lands on the page as a movable element — drag it onto the signature line, and use the corner handle to size it like a real pen signature (roughly 4–6 cm wide).
- Need the date or "Approved" next to it? Click Text, click the page, type. Same for your name in print letters below the line.
- Click Download edited PDF. The signature is permanently merged into the file — not an overlay, not a separate layer someone can toggle off.
Phone users get the best results: signing with a finger on a touchscreen produces a far more natural signature than any mouse.
Details that make it look right
- Size: a signature spanning the whole page width screams "pasted image." Resize to roughly the width of the printed line.
- Position: sit the signature on the line, slightly overlapping it, the way ink naturally would.
- Add the date beside or below — most agreements expect it, and it's a ten-second Text element.
- Multiple signature spots? Place once, then repeat on each page; initials in corners work the same way (draw smaller, place smaller).
- Filling fields too? The same Text tool fills name, address and date fields on non-interactive forms — see the whiteout trick below for correcting pre-printed text.
If the document arrives password-protected (common for financial agreements), unlock it first with the password you were given, sign, then send.
Is a drawn signature legally valid?
Plain-language overview, not legal advice: most jurisdictions — including India's IT Act framework, the US E-SIGN Act, and the EU's eIDAS — recognize electronic signatures broadly, and routine commercial documents (NDAs, service agreements, quotations, HR paperwork, rental agreements between private parties) are signed this way every day. What a drawn signature doesn't carry is cryptographic proof of signer identity; that's what certificate-based digital signatures (DSC, Aadhaar eSign, or audit-trail platforms like DocuSign) add.
A sensible rule of thumb: if the other party emailed you a PDF and asked you to "sign and send back," a drawn signature is exactly what they expect. For property registration, court filings, company incorporation and other documents where law or counterparty explicitly requires certificate-based signing, use the formal route. When in doubt on a high-stakes document, ask the counterparty or a lawyer — the question costs nothing.
Why local signing beats upload services for contracts
Upload-based signing sites receive your unsigned contract — the full text of your deal, salaries, client names, terms — onto their servers before you've even signed. Browser-based signing inverts that: the editor's rendering, the signature pad and the final merge all run as JavaScript on your machine. For commercial agreements, that's not paranoia; it's just the appropriate default. The signed file exists in exactly two places: your device, and wherever you choose to send it.
Common related jobs
Countersigning: received a PDF the other party already signed? Same process — your signature goes in the second block, and the download preserves theirs.
Sign and compress: scanned agreements are bulky; after signing, run Compress PDF before emailing.
Sign and protect a correction: if you whited out and retyped a detail with the editor's Whiteout + Text tools, remember whiteout is visual — for sensitive corrections, compress afterward, which rasterizes pages and destroys the hidden layer underneath.
Stamps: a scanned company stamp with the background removed (PNG) places via the Image tool exactly like a signature — useful alongside the watermark feature for marking copies PAID or RECEIVED.
Sending the signed contract properly
Two small habits save later disputes. First, send the signed PDF back on the same email thread as the original request — the thread itself becomes informal evidence of who sent what and when. Second, keep your own copy in a contracts folder named by date and counterparty (2026-06-Acme-NDA-signed.pdf); when several agreements pile up with one client, merge them into one reference file. If the agreement matters enough, ask the counterparty to reply confirming receipt — thirty seconds that has settled more arguments than any technology.
Frequently asked questions
Can the recipient extract or remove my signature? The signature is flattened into the page content on export — it behaves like printed ink, not a removable annotation.
Can I save my signature for next time? Currently you draw per session (nothing is stored — that's the privacy model). Drawing takes ten seconds on a touchscreen; a saved-locally signature feature is on the roadmap.
Does this work on phones? Fully — and signing is genuinely better on a touchscreen. The editor supports touch drawing and dragging.
The PDF won't open in the editor — why? It's likely password-protected. Remove the password first with the PDF Unlocker, then sign.
